Brazil Passes World’s First Internet Constitution [Infographic]

While countries like Sweden and Finland have declared Internet access a human right, on August 24, Brazil became the first country to pass a law guaranteeing equal access to its citizens. The Marco Civil Da Internet, also known as Brazil’s Internet Constitution, establishes the South American country as a leader in Internet freedom.

The goal of the bill is to ensure:

• Freedom of expression


• Equal treatment of Internet users and information


• Protection from certain types of information collection by companies and governments

The bill started in 2007 as the brainchild of Brazilian lawyer and academic Ronaldo Lemos. The first draft of the bill was crowdsourced on Wiki-Democracy.
