How to Send Your Least Favorite Human Annoying Cat Facts

What happens when you take the Internet’s favorite animal and turn it into the world’s most annoying troll? Why an app, of course! The app in question isn’t your average cat app, it’s Cat Facts, an old Reddit prank that is now readily available to anyone with an Android smartphone.

Essentially, the application will offer the user the ability to select a friend from their contacts and then send them facts about cats on the interval of their choosing. The most novel aspect behind this app is that the messages will be sent anonymously from my own personal server.

The original prankster, frackyou, sent the following messages to a younger cousin who posted his phone number on Facebook complaining about being bored. Frackyou responded by sending CatFacts, a made-up phone service that provided a stream of unrelenting cat facts. It was impossible to unsubscribe.

The idea came from this Reddit post asking users to share their best pranks. User imrobert was a clear winner:

Inspired by a post on Reddit a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been sending a stranger a “fun fact” about cats every morning for the last week and a half. When he responds I act like it’s an automated system. It usually goes something like this:

Me: Did you know that all cats are born blind? The ability to see comes within the next couple of weeks.

Him: Stop texting me.

Me: I hope you’re enjoying your subscription to Daily Feline Info*. To unsubscribe reply with “unsubscribe”.

Him: unsubscribe

Me: You’ve got to be kitten me! Are you sure you want to unsubscribe from Daily Feline Info?

Him: yes

Me: Command not recognized.

Smartphone users can pull the same prank on friends and frenemies using the app, Cat Facts. You’ll have to dish over some cat monies though, these facts ain’t free. Whether CatFacts will gain monetary wealth is not a consideration — the app’s developer Kyle Venn intends to share the code on Github for public use. In the meantime, you can download and access the app’s cat prank.

If you are a target of CatFacts, you can only unsubscribe by going to the app’s website. Typing “unsubscribe” will certainly not work in this case.
