Instagram’s Bolt is Now Official

Instagram has launched Bolt in New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa, reports our sister site Inside Facebook. This is despite the fact that the CEO of mobile voice app Bolt penned an open letter asking Instagram not to steal its name:

We’ve seen the rumors. You’re about to launch a one-touch photo-messaging app to rival Snapchat. And we sincerely hope it’s a spectacular success.

There’s just one problem: You’re going to name it Bolt.

We know it’s a great name, because we chose it last year when we set out to build a better mobile voice and messaging experience.

We’ve worked really hard since then building the Bolt brand and technology to where it is today. Please don’t destroy all that effort.

The photo-sharing platform recently leaked the app to a handful of users.

In a statement to InsideFacebook, Instagram said:

Bolt is the fastest way to share an image or a video — just one tap to capture and send. We decided to start small with Bolt, in just a handful of countries, to make sure we can scale while maintaining a great experience. We expect to roll it out more widely soon.

Users in the aforementioned countries can sign up with a phone number, take a photo and send it with one tap, and add text captions. Once a user swipes away from a photo, it disappears forever, a la Snapchat.
