Perhaps Dictionary.com’s choice of “privacy” for the 2013 word of the year was prophetic. Between Heartbleed, the Facebook experiments, the stolen shopper information and the increase in personal data theft, consumers are becoming more concerned with their privacy and security online.

According to a survey from WP Engine, which powers thousands of sites built on WordPress platforms, nearly all of the 2,100 respondents said they cared about their online privacy. The survey indicates that Americans are concerned about privacy on nearly every platform.

Facebook and email both ranked high as platforms people are most worried about. More than half of those surveyed said they were also concerned when using mobile apps, photo-sharing sites, as well as browsing the Web and using search engines.

However, three out of four American consumers are most concerned about the security of their financial data. More than half of the survey respondents said online shopping presented the next biggest threat.

While it’s clear that so many people give away the farm when using social media, 93 percent of those surveyed believed they should have “full rights” to their information. Respondents wanted ownership of family photos, browsing and shopping history, baby pictures, naked selfies and personal artwork.
