William Shatner, Ed Sheeran & Mariah Carey Join Celebrities-Only Facebook Mentions App (The Drum)

Celebrity Facebook users have rushed to join a new tool with which to reach the wider public, following a trial of the social network’s Mentions service in the U.S. Among the first to sign up to the app, which will be limited to a “few thousand” members, were singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, retired starship captain William Shatner and Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post. IBT The app sends celebrities an alert that lets them see messages that have been posted in which they have been mentioned – in a similar way as Twitter alerts users when they have been mentioned by other tweeters. It has already been adopted by Mariah Carey, who used the app to take part in at Q&A with fans, as well as actors Tyrese Gibson and Whoopi Goldberg – who waded into Facebook conversations to encourage and dress down fans, respectively.
