Kee Wah Bakery, a 70 year-old, family-run bakery based in Hong Kong with subsidiaries in Los Angeles, worked with graphic artist Kok Kit Lo to redesign packaging for its Custard Mooncake line.
Mooncakes are a popular Chinese delicacy, eaten in celebration of the Chinese Harvest Moon Festival in September.
Kee Wah wanted the design for its popular seasonal product to be minimalist looking. So it worked with designers to produce a series of boxes that reflected the different flavors with various color adaptations. The natural colors blend rich browns with luminescent whites, yellows and pinks.
According to Kee Wah’s website, in Chinese cultures people have often said that some of the markings and colors on the moon look like a rabbit. The rabbit graphics adorning the boxes are sleek, created from the most minimalist of shapes–lines that extend gracefully across the design and barely intercept with each other.
